Chapter 17

Dressed, Zoe left George's house without a backwards glance. That was just how it was. Sex, no commitment. No feelings, no matter how much it hurt. She ran a hand through her hair, trying to put it back in place. Next time she would at least duck into the bathroom and use a mirror. Who knew who was watching?

“Stupid,” she muttered to herself. She wrapped George's coat further around her. It was chilly outside, and she didn’t have one of her own. It had been mostly an accident when she had grabbed hers. It was by the door, and the moment she had opened it she had gotten an idea of how cold it was. It was a logical choice.

It had nothing to do with the fact she could smell George on it, and it wrapped around her like a hug. It had nothing to do with the fact it made her think of George. Made it easier to pretend that she was still there, still holding her.

Maybe Zoe was getting in too deep. Maybe she needed to go to George and tell her that the arrangement was off. That maybe, just maybe, she was starting to have feelings. But she wasn’t, not really. They were just after-effects of sex, of being close to someone. Of missing Ben.

Liar liar pants on fire, as the kids would say. She hadn’t thought about Ben at all.

The feelings were inconvenient, and eventually they would go away. Eventually George would go away, and it wouldn’t be a problem anymore.

Taking a deep breath, Zoe headed to the porch and stopped at the front door with a frown. There was an envelope taped to the door, with her name on it. The lights were off, and only Alexa’s car, the one Zoe was using, was there. Zoe's heart started beating faster. Was someone there?

“Stop being ridiculous,” she chided herself. It was probably Rebecca leaving a note, or something. Something completely harmless. She plucked the envelope off of the door and unlocked it, gratified to hear the deadbolt scraping back as she turned the key.

Closing and locking the door behind her, she dropped off her keys but took the envelope further into the house, up to her bedroom. She was drained, from both the sex and the evening as a whole. Alexa and Isaac were gone, too, the barbecue over. That wasn’t entirely strange, not really. Alexa probably had to work, and maybe they had headed straight back to Portland or gone back to someone else’s house for drinks. Craig had the house on the other side, maybe they were there. She could see the lights were on from her bedroom window.

Sinking down onto her bed, she wrapped George's coat closer around her, closing her eyes and inhaling deeply. It smelled like her, felt like her. She felt guilt tug on the edge of her conscious, a reminder, and she shoved it away. She wasn’t going to feel guilty, not tonight. It had been almost a year.
